Did you know that for the 11th connective year West Virginia has topped the State Farm’s list for the likelihood of vehicle crashes involving deer?

Usually when we think of car accidents we think of someone running into us, or something us possibly hitting someone else if we are distracted, but we rarely think outside those parameters.  While we may know that wildlife and nature can cause accidents, it’s not typically what our brains first think of. 

Unfortunately, MANY accidents are caused by wildlife, especially deer. 

Did you know that the odds of colliding with a deer is 1 in 43 in West Virginia, according to State Farm?  In 2016 the odds were 1 in 41, meaning the odds have slightly dropped in 2017, year to date. 

Deers can cause a lot of damage to a vehicle, sometimes totaling the car.  In fact, according to State Farm the average claim to fix a vehicle damaged by a collision with a deer was $4,179!  And while the odds of colliding with a deer dropped, the damage increased.  In 2016 the cost was $3,995 versus the nearly $200 increase this year.

So while you’re driving, be aware of your surroundings.  Oftentimes we become complacent while driving, like it becomes second nature.  We think that as long as we focus on the car in front of us, or the ones next to us, we are safe.  But that doesn’t mean unexpected things don’t appear in the road.  Exploded tires, deer, and other surprises can pop up in the road and cause a collision.
