Leave the scene

No matter how minor the accidents seems to be, always stop.  It’s important to stop and exchange information with all parties involved.  Once you have exchanged information it is then time to call the police so an accurate and official account of the accident can be taken.

Fleeing the scene of the accident is a crime, so make sure you always stop and exchange information.  You never know when a problem caused by the accident will occur, not everything is noticeable immediately and you might find internal car damage or physical pain after the incident.

Not call the police

Always call the police and get an accident report taken.  It will help protect you in the long run.  You never know if someone’s contact or insurance information is up to date or even real.  Individuals might try to participate in insurance fraud and claim the accident or their injuries were much worse than they really were.  Calling the police insures that you are protected.

Forget to Document

Whatever you do, don’t lose the other person information.  You’ll need the other parties name(s), insurance carrier, policy number, make and model of their car, and the license plate number.  If there are any witnesses, get their names and phone numbers as well.

Take your time and clear your head.  Think about the details of the crash.  What street were you on, what did you see, where was the other car?  Give the most detailed description on the accident report and make sure you receive a copy of it.  Take photos of the accident and any injuries that have occurred.

Forget About it

Once you leave the scene of an accident a lot of things can happen.  You begin to calm down and during this time, is when you should be taking your next steps.  Where does your car need to be towed or taken?  Have you called your insurance company yet?  That should be the first thing that you do and register your claim.  Find out what your insurance covers and what your next steps are.  Don’t be afraid to stay on top of the insurance companies as well.  Don’t let your claim fall to the wayside.
