Blind spots are a major problem when driving and being able to minimize blind spots is harder than you’d think.

Have you ever driven a friend’s car or rented a vehicle you’ve never driven before and when you got in, wondered how people were able to see anything at all on the road due to blind spots? Many carmakers have begun offering blind-spot detection systems in their vehicles allowing you to minimize blind spots; because they know what a serious issue this can be while driving.

Way back in 1995, the SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) published a paper that gave instructions on how to position your rear-view mirrors to minimize blind spots. However, this positioning can be disorienting to drivers who have never set their mirrors this way before.

While it might take some getting used to, here is the recommended positioning for mirrors to minimize blind spots. Remember that positioning your mirrors like this is not a substitution for paying attention to your surroundings and double, even triple checking, before merging or changing lanes.

Even in vehicles that have blind spot detections, there’s never any reason to not double check before changing lanes. Being aware of the blind spots of your car, and getting into the habit of checking them allows you to be a safer driver and can help you avoid accidents.

Also being aware of when you are driving in other’s blind spots can help you drive defensively and avoid car accidents when others merge without checking their blind spots. You never know what others are doing while driving, with so many distractions on the road nowadays, people often aren’t paying attention to those around them. It’s your job to always be aware of what’s happening around you and to keep everyone in your car safe.

We hope you’ve learned something today and always remember to check your blind spots while driving. While we are here to help you if you get into an accident, we’d prefer you not get into one in the first place.

Safe driving.
